Here's my ranked list of the best noir endings. Fight me:

1. Sunset Blvd β€” Norma descending the stairs. 'Mr DeMille, I'm ready for my close-up.' Still the gold standard.

2. Out of the Past (1947) β€” Mitchum and Greer's final drive. One of them is going to kill the other. You know it. They know it. Mitchum just smokes.

3. Double Indemnity β€” Walter on the office floor dictating his confession. The moral center shifts in the last 90 seconds.

4. Detour β€” Al hitching on the dark highway. Cop car arrives. 70 minutes of fatalism delivered perfectly.

5. The Killing β€” the airport. The money. The wind. 'What's the difference.'

Change my mind.

You forgot Kiss Me Deadly. The nuclear briefcase opening. It's the darkest ending in the genre and it invented apocalyptic cinema.

Ace in the Hole. Kirk Douglas on the floor bleeding out typing 'I deserve this.' Colder than any of these.

Both good calls. Kiss Me Deadly bumps Detour off my top 5. Ace in the Hole is an honorable mention.
